What is a dnd one shot?

In short, a DnD one shot is an adventure that is typically completed within one session. The adventure starts with a clear objective in mind and wraps up with a satisfying conclusion by the end. It can be played through as a side quest to a larger DnD campaign or as a standalone adventure to try out new characters or settings.

Our one shots offer a variety of vibrant themes and unique scenarios to appeal to many different interests at the table. Would your players enjoy trekking through a maze-like jungle, resisting intense political powers, fighting against a horde of zombies, or solving a murder mystery? Maybe it’s all of the above!

How long is a one shot DnD?

Most game masters and players agree that running a DnD one shot should range from 3-4 hours. Some prefer a quicker 2-hour session while others may stretch it to 5 or 6 hours with an intermission fitted halfway through. Ultimately it’s up to you and your personal preference. These Rune Foundry one shots aim for the typical 3-4 hour range unless otherwise indicated.

A Dungeon Master’s (DM's) preparation time is also a factor to consider when determining how long a one shot will take. Some one shots can be as short as a single page but often lack sustenance and require much more prep time before running. Our downloadable PDFs have everything needed to successfully run the one shot with little prep time necessary. Just read through it once or twice and you’ll be set.

What do you need for a DnD one shot?

Besides needing a game master to narrate the adventure and players to run through it, here’s a list of other materials both required and optional.

Required materials include a character sheet either premade or ready to fill out manually, a DnD dice set, and a written adventure to bring the group into the fantasy world like the ones provided above. A physical or virtual tabletop (VTT) is also necessary to gather everyone in one place.

Optional materials that can enhance the immersion of the one shots include battle maps, magic items, background music, and relevant props. Rune Foundry also offers DnD t shirts, hoodies, and hats (coming soon) to express one’s passion for TTRPGs or to gift to a fellow player or dungeon master.
